Artist of the Month – Daniël Tomàs

Have you ever experienced that moment on your way back from a warm vacation, chin resting on your hand, staring out the window as the sun dips orangey-red through a few clouds and bending wheat fields? That cinematic moment when you feel like the star of an arthouse film, caught in the silent scene between two significant moments? This is the essence Daniël Tomàs captures in his music.

Today I’d like you to meet the pianist and composer as part of our returning Artist of the Month feature. You might also know him as Daniël van der Duim (working with e.g. Pepijn Gunneweg Alexandra Alden, Doppler Trio), or as he puts it himself; better known as ‘the piano virtuoso who plays in socks’. While scrolling through my phone I found out I still had his number saved, apparently from the days that I was working in festival promotion. We’d never met, but I saw Daniël playing with his band called Doppler Trio and I was very much intrigued by their cool sound. What a coincidence that we eventually meet after all for Ambitus!

Drifting away from jazz music (although never far away), Tòmas debuted with his own solo music in 2021 entitled Pintures. Soon, Pintures II followed and this year he released Urban Amnesia.

As Tomàs explains; he is not just a pianist. As a composer and producer he always centers his work whose around a narrative. His music arises from specific themes, inviting listeners into a world where they can close their eyes and dream within the story. This approach results in concept albums that are deeply introspective and emotional.

This year was full of highlights: a new EP, performing in a sold-out Concertgebouw and many new things that are coming up.

We are happy to introduce you to this incredible artist this month. Stay tuned for more.
