The Vernon Spring
The Vernon Spring is the recording project of London-born composer and producer Sam Beste. His music blends elements of jazz, soul, ambient, and songwriting, creating a distinctive and ethereal sound. Beste’s early exposure to a diverse range of music—from Thelonious Monk to Bob Dylan—shaped his eclectic musical palette. At eleven, a pivotal piano lesson ignited his passion for improvisation, setting the course for his musical journey.
In his early career, Beste served as the live pianist for Amy Winehouse, accompanying her throughout her career. This role led to collaborations with artists such as Gabriels, Kendrick Lamar’s producer Sounwave, Beth Orton, Kano, Joy Crookes, Matthew Herbert, and MF DOOM.
During his mid-twenties, Beste co-founded the alt-soul group Hejira and helped establish the Lima Limo collective and label, fostering a supportive creative community. By 2019, he began releasing solo work under The Vernon Spring, merging his jazz background with contemporary electronic production. His releases, including the acclaimed albums “A Plane Over Woods” and “Earth, On A Good Day,” showcase his signature style of ethereal piano layered with emotive vocals and subtle electronics.
In 2025, The Vernon Spring announced a new album, “Under a Familiar Sun,” set for release on May 9 via RVNG Intl. This album is described as a meditation on time, loss, and the quiet power of imperfection, featuring intricate collages of piano, voice, and field recordings that challenge conventional song structures.
Beste’s work as The Vernon Spring continues to evolve, offering listeners a reflective and immersive musical experience that resonates with the complexities of contemporary life.
