Hessel Moeselaar

Hessel combines his viola with modular synthesizers and live electronics, resulting in a kaleidoscope of melancholic and colorful soundscapes.

He enjoys presenting the viola in an experimental and unique way, while also bridging different musical styles. In addition to classical and electronic elements, his music incorporates influences from minimal, ambient, Arabic, and film music.

In short: a fusion of musical styles and sounds.

Hessel has performed at various festivals and venues, including De Melkweg, Grachtenfestival, Muziekgebouw Amsterdam, Splendor, Ruigoord, and De Roode Bioscoop.

In the fall of 2024, he toured across different cities in the Netherlands as part of Popronde.

With this project, Hessel also had the opportunity to compose the music for the eight-part YouTube documentary “Kika Stories”, produced by the Kinderen Kankervrij Foundation (KiKa). This series highlights different aspects of childhood cancer and was released in September 2022.

In the summer of 2024, Hessel recorded his debut album. With this album, he aims to introduce a new sound to the existing musical landscape. The recorded set blends various musical styles, with the underlying idea that (musical) boundaries are ultimately insignificant—and sometimes, they should be blurred.
