Frerick den Haan
Frerick den Haan is a pianist and composer from The Hague (NL). Escaping the hectic pace of the day, he creates his own world with his compositions in which chaos is transformed into order, creating an escapade to a certain form of tranquility for the mind.
His compositions contain influences from Maurice Ravel, Debussy, Hans Zimmer, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Chopin, Ólafur Arnalds, but also Death Cab for Cutie and Nirvana. Frerick seeks for a balance between the genres of neo-classical, impressionism, film- and indie music consciously seeking out the melancholy of the piano.
With a short run-up, he managed to find millions of people being captivated by his soothing melodies. In 2021 three of his compositions landed straight in a row in the largest Spotify editorial playlists, including Classical New Releases, Instrumental Study, Atmospheric Piano and Piano Chill; Apple Music’s largest neo-classical playlist. His music was used in the short animated film L’Étranger composed and directed by illustrator and animator Sarah Pannekoek. The film was multiple nominated at renowned national and international film festivals including FilmOneFest (USA), Framed Groningen (NL) and Longless Film Festival (IT). By the end of 2023, Frerick was named one of the biggest surprises of the year by Dutch music platform 3voor12. In 2024, his music was curated twice by Downton Abbey actress Michelle Dockery and once by Niall Breslin to be featured on BBC Radio 3.
With roots in jazz- and classical music, Frerick managed to develop himself into a versatile musician. In addition to his own music, he is a member of Dutch indiepop band Handsome Poets (known for their no.1 hits Sky On Fire, Dance The War Is Over), sells his own jazz trio cd in Japan, played with Hamid El Kasri; one of the bigger maâlem names in Morrocan gnawa (gnaoua) music and composed game music for a set of metaverse games by Dutch generative artist Beer van Geer.
